He Couldn't Take It 16mm, black and white, sound, 11 min

Genre: Experimental

"Features Ted Bailey, who aspires to live a quiet existence. On this particular occasion he tries to concentrate upon reading a book but the communications media have made thie inroads; the revved-up war news of the radio persists in intruding. Pop tunes, one hardly distinguishable from another, also puncture his concentration, as do the laxative commercials and stock market reports. "At last he is enticed out of the comfort of his home and is convinded he should race in pursuit of a tremendous bonus in trading stamps. In his acceleration he loses his life, but he does attain the serentiy he so ardently desired. His funeral comes off without a hitch. " L.N.

The Inventor 16mm, b&w, sound, 8 min

Genre: experimental

Story and narration (in heavy German accent) by Peter Schumann. "Peter Schumann claims (in modest tone) to have invented almost everything. 'I invented soup,' and after several other claimes, 'and also I invented myself.' "In time we learn that Professor Schumann also invented the first movie. We are invited to view this first film ever made, which is "about all the kings, and the old and terrible kings.' "The Professor relates their gory history in banal understatements and we are led simply to believe that 'King One killed King Two , and King Two killed King Three, and King Three killed King Four.' (and that all the other kings died later at home) "His final commentary: 'And God looks down and he thinks they were all stupid." - L.N.

Amalgram (1976) 16mm, color, sound, 70.25 min

Genre: Experimental

" a sequence of 4 films: Knots, Texture, Web, Plaited- four approaches of writing with light to reflect the possibilities of painting within film." -W.N. " This film not only achieves painting's high pictorial quality, with 24 'living' canvasses per second, PLAITED in fact leaves Pointilism far behind. If filming really is painting with light, as Louis Delluc once postulated, then it was surely only a matter of time before film makers would turn to the principlies of Pointilism. For a long time the innovator Nekes pondered about this project. The result, in it's effect on the audience, exceeds all expectations... Ingo Petzke

Hurrycan (1979) 16mm, color & b/w, sound, 80.5 min

Genre: Experimental

"Hurrycan has nothing to do with whirlwinds, although in this Nekes film the pictures journey across the screen, excitedly, spasmodically and flickering. The title weds the element of haste with the notion of a film can. Which in this case turns out to be something of a Pandora's Box and contains expectations for a new way of seeing. A computerized shutter system that Nekes had built now precisely controls the complicated interlocking of agitated images. The unexposed film runs through the camera several times in succession. According to a predetermined plan, only specific frames, so called 'Kinefelder' (at least two of them are needed to attain visual motion) are exposed. What has been filmed appears to be 'normal' enough on screen. Yet it seems segmented, somehow new and assembled in a strange fascinating way. Nekes works with film images like a composer with polyphonic structures. The motif appears in many variations. diversely super-imposed. conducted contrapuntually and in unison. Nekes calls this prinicple 'polyvisual'. Art historians are familiar with such modes of perception since cubism, which operated with simultaneous views of one and the same object."

Jum-Jum 16mm, color, sound, 9.5 min

Genre: Experimental

Co-maker: Dore O. "In JUM-JUM the girl on the swing flies up, hesitates, goes up and up and back and embarks on further rhythms. Our normal visual association to the swing and the simple arc is broken, the girl on the swing turns into a staccato movement, a light/colour symbol of movement. We become detached from the girl and can see only visual rhythms. " Stephen Dwoskin, 'Film Is' 1975

Kelek (1968) 16mm, sound, 58 min

Genre: experimental

Keywords: art, Structural _ Minimal

"Kelek belongs to the 'structural' or 'minimal' cinema movement in that its content is subordinated to the viewer's perception and has no intrinsic significance. Unlike most examples of this genre. Though, Kelek is never boring and is brought to a new awareness of the process of perception. The five basic shots of the film have to be filled by the viewer's own consciousness and there is absolutly no opportunity given for any spurious identification." W.N. "Kelek is a regular film. There is no more 'in that place' or 'in that scene' ...' Kelek is a film which moves exclusively on one level, that of seeing." Wim Wenders Filmkritik Feb 1969 "Werner Nekes is making the films that those who oppose thier radical pronouncements to his radical aesthetics, ought to be making, and yet are not." Frankfurter Rundschau "Werner Nekes seemed to me the most improtatnt member of the Hamburg group; very preoccupied with form, with movements with structure... Kelek deals with shape, movement. The camera is steady, focussed on detail, a bridge, a street; the progression is slow, careful, calculated, abstract. A very pure visual music was coming to me from his film" Jonas Mekas Village Voice
