A man is only a particle inserted in unstable and entangled wholes. These wholes are composed in personal life in the form of multiple possibilities, staring with a knowledge that is crossed like a threshold—and the existence of the particle can in no way be isolated from this composition, which agitates it in the midst of a whirlwind of ephemerids. This extreme instability of connections alone permits one to introduce, as puerile but convenient illusion a representation of isolated existence turning in on itself.”
—Georges Bataille

total running time: 100 min.

Wednesday, APRIL 14, 1999, Anthology Film Archives, 9 PM:

MATERIAL MEDITATIONS OR RETINAL JOY curated by Bradley Eros and Brian Frye

Larry Gottheim Fog Line (1970), 11 min.

Barry Gerson Translucent Appearances (1975), 22 min.
Joyce Wieland Cat Food (1967-68), 13 min.
Larry Gottheim Barn Rushes (1971) 34 min.

The metaphysical significance of the seriality of the phenomenal world is expressed metaphorically in the form of the Eternal Return. Primeval mists clear and reveal the Tree of Life; the effigy of the sacrifice is consumed and restored. The ineffable leaves its mark most plainly in this, its material residue.

total running time: 79 min.

The poetic cinema translates the experiential world into its visual analogue. These visceral, sensual expressions of individual experience are documents toward and outline of the poetry of cinema, single elements in a grand and mysterious project.

total running time: 84 min.

Wednesday, MARCH 17, 1999, Anthology Film Archives, 9 PM:

FILMS BY MALCOLM LE GRICE curated by Bradley Eros and Brian Frye

Berlin Horse (1970), 7 min.
Blackbird Descending (Tense Alignment) (1977), 110 min.

Two rarely seen films by Malcolm LeGrice, one of the key figures in the English materialist film movement. Blackbird Descending, his feature-length film, is an investigation of phenomenal experience. Transforming the banality of everyday life into a mysterious drama of potential events, Blackbird Descending subtly disturbs its casual premises, generating gripping suspense through the barest possible means.

total running time: 117 min.
